Community Based Pollution Prevention for Two Urban Cities—A Case Study

Pollution prevention is an approach for generating less waste using fewer toxic chemicals while conserving water and energy. Even though pollution practices have been encouraged over thirty years, many smaller businesses not considered or adopted such techniques. This study examines the effect of a community-based designed to emphasize benefits health economic well-being urban communities when source reduction are implemented by in community. Partnering with existing community groups Newark Jersey City, NJ, technical assistance was provided small medium-sized under grant funding from Region 2 US Environmental Protection Agency. In this research, 32 were evaluated opportunities implementation plans drawn up. After these operational changes, emission cost savings determined reported back respective business owners as well during meetings encourage additional participation. Based on case studies, several measurable achieved, including yearly saving 932 pounds hazardous waste, 3917 non-hazardous 13.62 metric tons carbon equivalent (MTCE) greenhouse gases $5335 USD.
